Kat placed the letters back behind the frame and fastened it again.

So that had been the beginning. This was the end.

She was not sure what to feel. Anger at Lettice, for it was this letter that had sent her across the world. She might be wed to a vicar’s son by now, a curate with the promise of a small but comfortable living when the present elderly incumbent died. She might even have been happy, or believe herself happy, though cribbed and confined.

No, she owed Lettice gratitude. She had known nearly three years of freedom and fulfilment and knowledge of what a marriage might be, experiencing passion without possession.

She also owed Zebediah’s sister the story of his death. But why grieve Lettice just yet, when, after all, she would never have seen her brother again, except in the unlikely circumstance that either brother or sister chose to endure a couple of four- or even six-month journeys?

Instead, she would send a letter talking about the rainbow that had dutifully appeared across the valley after the last storm; how a goanna as long as a pony had wandered through her rose garden, its tongue flickering; how Zebediah would send his love too if it were possible to get him to put pen and ink to paper. She would enclose some pressed wattle blossom, which might even retain a ghost of scent by the time it reached England.

She would send Zebediah’s sister an illusion, and for a while she might share it too.
